Mega Man Unlimited macOS

macOS users rejoice: Mega Man Unlimited Mac is now available!
Update (8/6/24): Game version updated to 1.3.1 + improved compatibility with macOS 14.4

Mega Man Unlimited is an excellent fan-game created by the good people at MegaPhilX.com. The game plays and feels just like the original Mega Man games for the NES and the artwork is absolutely stunning. I’ve wrapped the game (via Wine) so that macOS users can enjoy the game too.

More information about the game can found here.

It doesn’t seem to work for me! I downloaded and unzipped it just fine, but it won’t run under mac OS X 10.8.3. The MMU logo shows up in the program bar, but there is no window, nothing :(.

How long do you wait before closing the program? You may need to reopen it again. I’m running 10.8.4. Let me know if you make any progress.

  3. J.Vis

No, no progress. Had it sat there opened for almost three hours, but nothing happened. Do have to force quit it, though, so I have a hunch that it’s playing and yet, it isn’t… If I ask for it to show me all the program’s windows, I get nothing either :(. Too bad, I really wanna play this game.

I’m updating the game client soon with a new wrapper and engine for wine, so hopefully that will fix your problems. The game also runs better; no more menu music stutter. Update: new version available, please check post above.

It doesn’t work for me. When I launch the game, the Megaman helmet icon pops-up in the dock, stays for a few seconds then disappears. Nothing really went wrong but nothing happened. I’m on OS X 10.8.3 (12D78), I haven’t updated yet but from previous comments it doesn’t seem to be the issue.

Let’s see if the log file stored anything:
Go to the Mega Man Unlimited.app, right-click and then choose “Show Package Contents”. Double-click “Wineskin.app” and then click the “Advanced” button. Click the “Tools” tab, and then under the Utilities column click “View Last Run Log Files”. Copy and paste the contents of the “LastRunWine.log” to a site like pastie.org and then send me the link.

I’ll try my best to diagnose it!

FYI I figured out the problem was with the expanding. Depending on what program you used to unzip the files it could result in a corrupted unzip. I used stuffit the first time which isn’t good for 7zip but Keka worked fine.

Game is running great, however I cannot get it to map my controller inputs.

I’m attempting to use an original NES controller through a RetroBit adapter. Any suggestions?

You can import your Windows save by right-clicking on the app, selecting “Show Package Contents”, open “drive_c”, then open “Program Files”, and “Megaman Unlimited”. Then, copy your Windows save into the Megaman Unlimited folder. Hope this helps!

P.S. I’ve made a Mac port of Megaman Unlimited version 1.1.0, with Easy Mode and Insta-Kill Mode, if anyone wants me to post a link to that, I will.

Thanks, James! When I run on my Mac (10.7, mid 2008 MacBook), I receive the following error:

The Program MMU.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Any thoughts on what I could do to work around that problem? Thanks!

Whoops, I forgot to include the config file! I think that may be what caused it, and I’ll try and re-upload it as soon as I can. Sorry about that!

  12. James

EDIT: Yep, that’s what caused the error. I am re-packaging the app and will be uploading the fixed version soon.

I’m new at this, so please go easy on me. I’ve never downloaded and played ROMs in my life. Heck, I don’t even play computer games, period! I’ve always been a straight-up, traditionalist console gamer. Therefore, even the most basic of computer science jargon leaves me perplexed. The only reason I am here is because I happen to be a big Mega Man fan, and recently learned that a fan-game got released and I hear it’s really good, so I wanted to check it out. This is what I did:

I Google-searched, “Mega Man Unlimited Mac” to get a file to download. I found this site. I clicked on the link above (via MediaFire) and downloaded it. Cool! I go to my files, click on the downloaded cube and type in the given password… everything hunky-dory! So now I’ve got a file called, “Mega Man Unlimited” with the Blue Bomber’s iconic helmet staring at me. Looks awful promising! So I click on it… nothing happens. I go back to the website (i.e. this one) and learned that you need to unzip the file. So I download their suggested Keka application… sure, why not? I drag the Unlimited file into the Keka application and it converted it into a .zip file. Sweet, now I’m done, right? Apparently not, because once I opened it, I got a new file called, “Mega Man Unlimited 2” with the exact same icon listed previously! My assumption is I reverted the .zip file, taking me back to the previous step. And that’s where I’m stuck now. Desperate to DIY, I right-clicked on the MMU file and clicked “Show Package Contents”. I saw something called “Wineskin” (???). I noticed a couple of the comments above discussing Wineskin as some sort of “wrapper” (again, ???). Do I need to download this thing? Is this the “key” to my ROM access? I checked the Wineskin website and I saw many different versions. My assumption is I want the latest one, but… I dunno. This is where I decided to quit being a trooper and simply ask for some assistance.

This may not be the best place to ask, but I don’t know where else to go. My question is very straightforward: how do I start-up Mega Man Unlimited on a Mac OSX 10.7.5? Hopefully, my above-explained rationale will provide you with some perspective. Please try to keep your response “dummy”-friendly (yes, I am a dummy!) if at all possible. My deepest thanks to any and all who offer their assistance. Cheers!

*UPDATE* OK, I tried one more thing: I took the downloaded MMU cube-thing and dragged that into Keka (instead of the icon) to see if I get anything different. To my surprise, the screen actually loaded up. Cool. So now I can technically play the game… BUT, there still remain two primary concerns I need addressed:

The first and biggest one is the screen size. The screen I had at default was roughly one-quarter the full-screen. Full-screen is the only way to go for me. I accessed the options menu and saw “Display Size”. Cool, just what I needed, right? Yes… and no. While it’s true the box gets larger and smaller when adjusted, the problem occurs when I access the full-screen setting. The game locks up! It doesn’t freeze, it simply no longer responds to my controls, thereby forcing me to quit the game. I browsed through the other settings (both in-game and out-game) and none of it looked particularly helpful. So my question: is there some sort of patch I can download or setting to tweak in order to prevent this lock-out from occurring? I’ll play at half-screen if I absolutely need to, but I prefer I don’t.

My other question pertains to filming. I would like to record footage of myself doing a blind play-through for laughs, and maybe a walkthrough later. Any suggestions for a good software recording device for Mac users? I know of CamStudio, but that’s for PCs and I hear the frame-rate is somewhat choppy. I prefer it to be free (I’m a college student on a budget, mind you) but I’m open to paying a little money if it delivers what I need for game recording (of decent quality, no less).

Again, any and all helpful responses are gratefully appreciated. Thank you!

I can’t fucking believe it… This.game.is.cool. This is the soul of megaman and it is amazing that a bunch of fans managed to find it again like this. Well done, kids! ;)

This game is great, though everytime I select “full screen” the game closes and goes completely white, and is immeadiately unplayable. Can you fix this problem?

    / ? \ a little help please? / ? \

when I try and boot up the game, the app icon shows up, but after a minute or so, the app immediately shuts down, and doesn’t load the game, do you know what I need to do?

I completely repackaged the app with an updated version of the game and better macOS compatibility. Check the post for the download and password info. Thanks again for the tip.

I’m having the same issue as others with the icon opening and immediately disappearing without anything opening….is there any workarounds or info on a fix?

Thank you so much for the effort in porting this, we all appreciate it!

  20. Pippin

This may be an issue with my Mac, but it downloaded fine, Keka did it’s stuff, but I can’t open the file because “MacOS can’t tell if this is free from malware”. Is there anything I can do?

  21. Pippin

EDIT: Never mind, it works, but I’m having a similar problem to everyone else. the icon will bounce for a couple seconds, then stop. Can I have a hand?
