MUA3 Guide – Hawkeye

Overview

Hawkeye is one of the best when it comes to widespread ranged attacks. His range and synergy more than makes up for his poor attack and defense stats by allowing him to provide a constant stream of damage to enemies. He can help stun bosses, synergize with his many of his own attacks and has several different ways to deal both fire and shock status effects.

Attacks & Abilities

Light attack Projectile
A 4-part arrow combo string. The first three shots are single arrows and the final shot is three arrows. Holding down the light attack button at any point will charge the shot, which then gives the attack a knockdown property. This is useful when you have a weak enemy coming toward you and you want to stop them in their tracks. It’s most effective when the 4th shot is charged since the charge effect is applied to three arrows instead of one, letting you knockdown several enemies that might bother you. All hits are projectile-type attacks.

Heavy attack FireEnergy
A backward jump followed by a linear shot of three fire arrows. This heavy attack is special in that it can apply fire attribute damage, which can set enemies aflame to deal damage over time. A fire ability attribute and energy-type attack.

Air Attack Projectile
Fires a multishot of six arrows that land in a pentagon pattern. It deals decent damage and allows Hawkeye to stay relatively safe while recovering EP because it flinches enemies. This attack causes Hawkeye hang in the air a bit longer, so it can also be used as a “third jump” to help dodge ground attacks. A projectile-type attack.

Piercing Shot ProjectileBash
Loads a single arrow into his bow and fires it at max tension. The arrow travels far forward and deals good Stagger damage. This attack can be charged to increase the attack radius and deal even more Stagger damage without costing more EP. Self-synergizes with Scattershot and Exploding Arrows.

Scattershot EnergyExplosive
Leaps into the air and shoots multiple arrows at the ground in front of him that explode after a set amount of time. This attack provides a good way to set up the bulk of his synergies while staying off the ground and away from attacks. Use Piercing Shot or Shock Value afterward for a self-synergy.

Exploding Arrows FireEnergyBurn
Fires multiple arrows into the sky that rain down and explode on impact. Hold the button to move the aiming reticle around the stage and position where you want it to land. The attack effect lasts for a while and deals fire attribute damage which can set enemies on fire. Use Piercing Shot or Scattershot immediately after for a self-synergy.

Shock Value ShockProjectileShock
Shoots a handful of electric arrows that spread outward. Deals decent damage and has the shock ability attribute, which allows it to paralyze enemies and make them vulnerable to attacks. Self-synergizes with Scattershot.

EX: Extreme
Hawkeye rapidly fires three sets of arrows into the sky that rain down on the battlefield. The first set are normal arrows, the second set are shock attribute arrows and the final set are fire attribute arrows. A very wide area attack that works well at cleaning up enemies, especially since it can paralyze and catch enemies on fire.

Strategy

Boss / Strong Enemy
Keep Hawkeye as far as you can from the enemy. If targeting a single enemy or a tight group, use Piercing Shot to bring down their Stagger gauge. If you fire Exploding Arrows and then follow up with Piercing Shot you can get additional damage with a synergy. You can also self-synergize with Exploding Arrows quickly followed by Shock Value to deal both decent HP and Stagger damage.

Once stunned, either continue to self-synergize with Scattershot into Shock Value or look for team member synergies with his other abilities. If you need to recover EP, his heavy attack works well to also apply fire attribute damage.

Weak Enemy
The strategy is much the same as for strong enemies, keeping Hawkeye away from mobs. Focus on dealing widespread damage with his self-synergies, such as Scattershot and followed by Shock Value. If you’re far from enemies and see a group in the distance, Exploding Arrows works well to deal fire attribute damage all at once. You can also self-synergize by firing Scattershot at the Exploding Arrows attack to deal a lot of area of effect damage and catch everyone on fire, which works well for weak enemies.

Tips

  • Hawkeye has multiple self-synergies, which allow him to really ramp up his own damage. Scattershot synergizes with both Shock Value and Exploding Arrows. Piercing Shot synergizes with Exploding Arrows.
  • Hawkeye really burns through EP, so be sure to pepper in light and heavy attacks. If fighting a group of enemies, hop near or through crowds and repeatedly use his air attack.
  • His air attack flinches enemies and allows him to stay mostly airborne, which can really help him to avoid damage.
  • Learn the absolute furthest point that each of his attacks will reach. Any extra range you can muster will give you more time to react to enemies and attacks.
  • Using an ability directly after a light or heavy attack will help to speed up the light/heavy end animation.
  • If you want to spam a heavy attack, hold L while repeatedly tapping the heavy attack button to speed up the end animation and use the attack at a faster rate.
